I can assuredly say without a shadow of a doubt, good riddance to 2011. You were a crap year for a number of personal reasons, plus generally a bad year globally overall. Here's hoping for a better 2012.

P.S. Now I was just thinking to myself about Walt Disney Animation ( I do that a lot). It highlights the power that a name can have. For example Pixar, when people see that name above a film, they know it's a name they can trust to deliver a film to be enjoyed by everyone. Disney used to have that but they lost it. Keeping audience's trust is difficult enough when you have, its even more difficult to get it back.

It's not like Disney has had to reinvent themselves before, but the difference is they were the only fish in the sea. Now they are trying to find their identity in a middle of an ocean full of animation studios. They're the old boy surrounded by young upstarts. That's probably why they haven't announced any projects after 2013.

In one respect it's a bit like Nintendo. They are also the grand daddy of video-game console developers. When they couldn't compete with the Playstation 2 or Xbox they completely change course and went after a whole new audience with the Wii. And it work. Some could argue however that they went too far away and alienated their original audience. That's the problem now, Walt Disney Animation has to find what a new Disney film is, whilst it still being recognisable as a Disney film (us fans sometimes don't help complaining it's either too similar to previous films or complaining when it's too different).

I honestly don't know what the future holds for the studio that started it all. Maybe they should choose one medium though, its better for brand identity that way. Whatever they do, I'll be looking at it with great interest.

Just an update on the Droomwevers project.

I have caught up on all I lost in the great usb disaster of 2010. I have drawn and coloured all the different flash elements, and set up each piece of animations flash file.

I have now started animating again.

I have got an example here but it isn't finished, I have got to add some secondary animation with a wacom tablet.

Just to say I have some more news. I sent my old student film into the CBBC's My Toons website and they liked it. They want to put it up on the website for three months. It will hopefully be up in a few weeks. I'll post a link. So if you are a 6 to 12 year old, know a 6 to 12 year old or can pretend to be a 6 to 12 year old, please rate it highly because who knows, the BBC might want more.

Working on an animation test for a company making a 2D fighting game. If they like it, I can do more and get paid.

Waxing Philosophical

I would like to just wax philosophical for a moment about why I don't colour my drawings and why I put so many up on deviantart.

Firstly I do a lot of requests for people on deviantart and this is the only way to give them to the people. Am I proud of a lot of these request drawings? No, not really. Am I proud of any of my drawings? No, not really.

Every time I do a drawing I know that I can do better, so what is the point of colouring in and finishing this picture when I know the next one will be better. There is no such thing as a finished picture. I would rather have a drawing where I like some aspects of it and not others, rather than a drawing I thought was all just a bit meh.

Practice makes perfect, and you can't be expected to get better if you spend time finishing art.

Besides I don't know what you guys and gals out in Internet land are going to like or dislike, so if I get harsh criticism on a sketch that took me 5 to 10 minutes, no big deal. If I get criticism on a drawing I spent a few days finishing, that hurts.

And that's why I don't colour and I post up a lot of drawings.

It wasn't until I coloured this that I realised that two of the characters colour schemes make them look like the original X-Men and Spider-man, so I did so experimenting. What do you think?

Deviantart has got a meme going around. I don't usually do these but this one was to interesting. I did decided to go for a slightly different tack however. Instead of just naming companies or movies etc I wanted to name each person and why they influenced me. Of course at the time I probably didn't know that these people were influencing me, and I found out in later life.

1. Walt Disney, I couldn't start this without putting him in. He is the reason I drew at all and if I could accomplice a fraction of what he did it would be a life well led.

2. Stephen Hillenburg, the man who gave the world Spongebob and a testimony that you can have a show all about character.

3. Shinguru Miyamoto, the man who created Mario and gave me my favourite videogames.

4. Stan Lee, if I could have his level of enthusiasm when I'm his age, I would be immensely happy.

5. Akira Toriyama, the first manga I ever read was Dragonball.

6. John Romita Snr, the author of how to draw the marvel way, a book that really helped me how to draw.

7. William Hanna and Joe Barbera, inspirations in how to grasp an opportunity and make it your own.

8. Bruce Timm, forever changed the way I saw and drew superheroes.

9. Jeff Smith, author of Bone, the best comic ever.

10. Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets and a inspiration in how just to live your life.

11. Craig McCracken, created some of my favourite shows and gave me hope that someday I could create my own show.

19. Chris Sanders, Lilo and Stitch is one of those movies that certified in me that animation is what I want to do.

20. The nine old men, I shouldn't have to name them but I will, Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery and Wollie Reitherman, created animation and forever changed my life.

21. Stephen Silver, I love these mans designs and he also gives me hope that an englishman can make it in Hollywood.

22. Eric Goldberg, after I saw the genie I knew I wanted to animate just like him.

23. Glen Keane, the master of his craft I bow to his skills.

24. Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng, my two favourite Warners directors.

25. Mark Henn, the man who animated Mickey in a Christmas Carol and variety of Disney princesses, I would love to talk to him.

26. Richard Williams, the author of The Animators Survival Kit, my tome.

27. Andreas Deja, I would love to talk to him too.

28. Ron Clements and John Musker, the men responsible for some of my favourite Disney Films.

DeviantArt has got a contest to design the 8Th evil ex for Scott Pilgrim. This is my entry. I know it's not coloured and I will get to that but I wanted to make sure I was entered first. I tried very hard to design within the style of Bryan Lee O'Malley. Her name is Abigail Abacus. She met Ramona in college as a maths student. She thought she was dating Ramona, Ramona didn't really think they were.She fights Scott using her psychic maths powers. She'll crunch numbers on Scott's face.

See I told you I would colour it.

The Toons redesign in colour. I wanted to give them matching uniforms so you could easily identify them as a team and brothers, but have different colours so you could individually identify them,. You know the Teenage mutant ninja turtle thing.

This is a drawing of ktschy character from her comic strip. I enjoy the comic, and since this character is a caricature of herself, I guess I just drew a portrait of her. Anyway it was a lot of fun to draw and I think it turned out pretty cute.

This is one for Andrew Dickman. I always enjoy looking at his work so I wanted to draw this picture of his characters Happy Face and Clang for him.

This is my entry to the Schoolism Chris Sanders Contest. The theme was 'Nightmares'. I don't expect to win but I hope it gets some laughs.

It recently came to my attention that my superhero team 'The Toons' who are supposed to be brothers, didn't look much like brothers. So I decided to redesign them to have the same features, just the proportions are different.

Tag is a different shade of blue.

RAM is now an old fashioned tv set.

Zed has no legs and just floats.

Tag's girlfriend is no black and white.

Mort has a beard.

I wanted to do this a celebration of one of my favourite directors, Chuck Jones. Like when Chuck Jones took over the Tom and Jerry unit I always wondered what it would be like if Chuck Jones took his hand to the Disney Crew. Unfortunately, we will never know. Rest in peace Chuck Jones.

I have redesigned my scarecrow character. Through no fault of my own, he ended up looking a bit like Earthworm Jim, so I changed him.

Runners job at Passion PIctures and Animation Station Storyboard Reels

Firstly some good news. I have got a trial day as a runner at Passion Pictures this Wednesday. Hopefully this will lead to something. I'm quite nervous.

Secondly my pal Simon has edited my storyboards for the first three episodes of Animation Station. There is no sound but it should give you a general idea. We are of course re-writing some of these. No idea is perfect.

I was going to put them up here but they are mp4 files and they didn't seem to work right when I uploaded them.

I converted it into a quicktime file.

Does anyone remember ages ago I was doing work on the logo for Trisori Limited. Well it went nowhere. But I did something for it so I used it to practice in flash. This is strictly a practice walk cycle. I know I made it wrong in flash, but practice makes perfect right.

Hi. Firstly I would like to thank David Fortier, Dave Pruiksma, Will Finn and the many kind members of the 11 second club for their advice on my previous reel. Due to their suggestions I have decided to gut my previous reel and make this new one up. All the work featured on this reel can be seen in full at my website www.daryl-rhystaylor.co.uk.

The contents of this reel are as follows
1. My entry into the 11 second club May competition.
2. 2 clips from my student film 'Insane Science Seeking with the Professor'.

I eventually hope to replace the clips of my student film with new flash animations.

Blue Sky Studios Internship, Animation Station Pitch and Trisori Limited

Above is the picture I did of the cast of my proposed television show Animation Station. I don't want to give too much away at the moment but I hope you like them.

I've got a very small freelance gig doing an 8 second animation for Trisori Limited. They want a model walking across the logo and diving off the end. The model had to look a bit like the photo of the model in the top left-hand corner.

This is my entry into the Blue Sky Studios Story Internship. I had to make a storyboard in no more than 60 panels featuring a cat getting safely down from a tree. This is what I came up with. I hope everyone likes it.

I have some good news at the moment. I working voluntarily on a Television Pilot. No pay of course, but it should be experience for my reel. 2 minutes of 2D animation is a lot of work but it will be worth it. I'll post more when I find out some more.

I had a great time at the Pixar Masterclass that Escape Studio held in London. I really learnt a lot from Andrew Gordon and Matthew Luhn. Thanks a lot. I did realise however that I got a long way to go, so time to make a new showreel. Off I go!
